I've tried riding with studded tires but can't manage to keep upright, constantly slipping and sliding even on flat roads. I also have a LWB bent dual 26" which I've tried my studded tires on and again have great difficulty handling the slippery conditions. I don't know how you manage this? I like the Scwalbe tires also, cost nearly as much as my car winter tires though.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09740208769442089438noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6048540434559497828.post-76614876876491637442017-01-11T01:03:47.625-05:002017-01-11T01:03:47.625-05:00Great! I was the particularly hairy fellow present Sunday afternoon. Reading your writings here are what spurred me to learn more about Cruzbikes, which led me to discover the event in St. Charles, a mere afternoon's ride away from home!

I came to ride a Cruzbike, and the $20 price of admission was well worth it! I enjoyed the test ride loop on a Quest right away upon arrival, but was sad to learn that the Sofrider had sold out. The Quests were just out of my price range!

The next 'bent I had to test was any HP Velotechnik; a local shop had an old model there, but they wouldn't allow me to demo ride it. Instead I took a new USS Speed Machine for a few loops, and it was a breeze. Tomorrow morning I'm making the long trek into the city to hopefully test ride the old demo HP that is just barely within my price range. If it rides well enough, I may be a first time 'bent owner sooner than I thought! My face is still sore from smiling so much from the day's test rides.

My morbidly obese Chicago friends have been getting the hard sell on buying a trike; each entry level offering I rode was a blast!

What an amazing and rewarding life it must be to be involved in the recumbent industry. The attraction of Speed Machine for me would be the lower seat, having found Street Machine as high as I could tolerate with short legs. Street Machine is very nice to ride once you're not trying to get your legs on the floor with its direct under-seat steering.

Reading the comment above on frame kit - I'll have to try costing it up. If only because it could be a bike I buy in pieces over time :-) The bike whole is a lot more expensive than Street Machine.

I do wonder how the 20" front wheel would compare to a 24 or even a 26 one some of our unpaved tracks. Most of my riding is on road, though the roads here are pretty poor. We do have Sustrans tracks which may be materials such as shale. I suspect any recumbent could be harder on bridleways where the upright has an advantage in terms of low speed balance.Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01461091641818063963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6048540434559497828.post-66735901204922198002014-09-02T17:06:11.183-04:002014-09-02T17:06:11.183-04:00Identical situation, setting up my new quest 451 a...Identical situation, setting up my new quest 451 and getting contact in front. For me it's like comparing strawberry to vanilla ice cream; either one works fine at Thanksgiving. It depends what I want. Moreover, with a little ingenuity, either one does the job of the other.

Generally, I'd say that the RAAM Vendetta was designed and built specifically for ultra long distance racing, so it does that job well. The Silvio was designed and built for...ultra long distance racing but was then reframed as a road bike, good for daily riding and to be maybe a bit more "practical," with suspension, clearance for fenders and mounts a rack.

Having said that, I think it's the rider who determines what a bike can do, not the bike.

Best,
Robert
Robert Matsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11706818647792433678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6048540434559497828.post-32463120201907138752014-04-12T22:02:20.923-04:002014-04-12T22:02:20.923-04:00Hi Robert,

What do you intend to do with the bike? Do you have any physical limitations? What's your budget? That sort of thing. A bike that's great for me might be overkill for someone else; or a bike that's great for high-speed club riding may be terrible for commuting, etc.Robert Matsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11706818647792433678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6048540434559497828.post-92174471655694274322014-03-03T14:52:12.812-05:002014-03-03T14:52:12.812-05:00Robert, what did you think of the Mirage Nomad? I'm looking for a good bent and don't have any idea what to buy. A lot of the Finnish companies aren't doing much with their two wheelers. Lightning bikes has a few great products. Any thoughts? I think Mirage may be an awesome recumbent maker but I always like to wait for the 2nd or 3rd model to come out. Marcoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07604967871195163506noreply@blogger.com
